Reading Common words - 'Colour names'

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x3 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a set of the first 100/200 high frequency words and practise seeing these words on sight while matching these words with images. This set focuses on x15 ‘colour names’ - all words included have a matching image. This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or those needing some individual 1:1 support. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning/need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? An adult can pre-cut along dotted lines provided for the set of x15 words (including to separate words and images). These pieces can then be shuffled and placed face-up for learners to read and match. Resource Details… These words are all from the list of Y1 ‘common words’ to read and spell. Some are also from the from the first 100/200 high frequency word list. It is possible to ‘sound out’ ‘most’ of these words, however some are ‘tricky’. Words to sound out can be identified by a ‘white tick’. Tricky words (not to be sounded out) can be identified by a white ‘cross’. In the ‘word box’ at the top-right there is a coloured ‘triangle’. The colour indicates which phonics phase each word fits in with. Pink triangles indicate that the words are from ‘phase 2’, purple triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 3’ and turquoise triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 5’. The ‘key’ at the top of each sheet also makes this colour-coded system clear. Red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters/sounds. It is possible to sound out and ‘work out’ some words which contain some red letters if the focus is placed on the black letters in those words which should be sounds learners know (according to which phonics-phase they are competent in). Where letters are underlined - this indicates that the letters together/separate have one sound. ‘Tricky words’ are underlined as one word instead. Each page is numbered e.g. ‘1 of 3’ - find page numbers on the lower right side of each sheet. The dark grey box outline colour indicates that these words are all part of the ‘colour names’ set. Sets for 'nouns’ and ‘number names to 20’ are already available and other common/high frequency word sets are coming soon… Special request ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes. Feedback would be wonderful! Thank you!

Word search - 'Back to school' words

(0)
What’s included? This download includes two pages (x2 A4 sheets, portrait orientation) featuring one word search for ‘back to school’ related words (page 1). The answers (on page 2) clearly show where all words are hidden, displayed in the same layout (as page 1) for easy comparison and quick reference. There are x17 words to find. Who’s it for? This word search has been designed for pupils in years one and two and maybe the early years, as well as students needing additional learning support. Resource layout This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young learners with reading key words. Knowing these common words both reading them on-sight and learning the correct spellings will benefit both reading and writing. The wordsearch letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. The back to school words have been organised into four groups of four, clearly showing all hidden words below the word search. As said, there are x17 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards). Words to find are; uniform, tie, coat, shoes, September (hidden with lowercase ’s’), teacher, pupils, class, term, pencil case, pen, ruler, date, lunch money, lunchbox, name tag and backpack. Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). This word search may be printed and laminated to be reused. Important message… ANY issues with any of this resource please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes. Feedback of this resource would be brilliant. Thank you! NEW online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available!

Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details This resource has been designed as a ‘back to school’ getting to know each other acitivity and therefore is ideal for the start of the new term. It is also helpful for any new student who starts in the class at any point mid-term. These sheets could make an interesting writing focused display for other learners in the school to better get to know their peers too! Both sheets are in the same layout, however one has been designed to be more simple than the other Simple Version Learners complete the sentences by writing their own information on the lines provided. There is a space on the right for learners to complete a simple ‘self portrait’ - adding their eye colour, eyebrows, nose, mouth and hair. The written information on the right of this links/should link to the portrait when completed. All about me! Mini book making. Back to school.

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x3 A4, portrait pdf sheets for learners to make their own ‘mini book’ to share in writing and drawing some simple information that is ‘all about me’ to help learners and new teachers to get to know each other. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Page 1 This page has been designed to be the ‘book’ itself. The top section is the front and back cover, the middle and lower section have been designed as the pages to go inside the book. Learners are to cut along ‘dotted’ lines on page 1 to create three separate strips - these are the ‘pages’ of the book. Learners then stack these three pages together - with the ‘All about me!’ cover positioned at the front and fold along the ‘dashed’ lines. Learners can write their name on the line provided on the front cover before continuing with making their mini-book. Once this has been done learners can then stick information (see pages 2 and 3) on the front AND back of these pages to add more information to their ‘all about me’ mini-book. If learners wish to include even more information more than one copy of page 1 can be provided for learners to access - although they will only need one copy of the top section (the front and back cover of the book!) Learners will each need a pencil, scissors and a glue stick. Adults may wish to ‘staple’ the spine of these mini-books together (along the ‘dashed lines’) once complete. Pages 2 and 3. These pages have been designed to be cut out as individual squares and completed by learners before being stuck into the prepared mini-book. Learners can choose which ‘squares/pages’ to include in their mini book - there are several to choose from… Information for learners to complete includes… drawing a picture of themselves writing the number for how old they are, drawing the correct number of candles onto a birthday cake to show this and recording in writing when their birthday is writing or drawing and labelling something that they did during the summer holidays colouring and writing the name of their favourite colour drawing and labelling their favourite food (on a plate) writing or drawing and labelling their favourite ‘thing to do’ circling a sentence to indicate whether they have a pet/s (or not) writing the type of creature their pet is/pets are and their pets name/s circling a sentence to indicate whether they like school (or not) writing or drawing and labelling something they like about/to do at school writing or drawing and labelling something they do not like about/to do at school Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes or create additions for this resource, just let me know. Handwriting practise - numerals 1 to 12

(0)
What’s included? This download includes one A4, pdf sheet (portrait orientation) to practise handwriting numerals 1 to 12. Who’s it for? I designed this resource to break down each step involved in writing these twelve numerals correctly, using green (go!) starting dots and red (stop!) dots to make it clear to learners exactly where to begin and end writing. Support (colour coded) arrows also guide learners on which direction to follow. This resource should help provide some focused additional support looking at these numerals more closely. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource details The font used is Sassoon Infant Std - size 150. This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each letter has clear ‘starting’ and ‘ending’ dots so learners know where to place their pencil to begin and dotted lines on top of letters provide guidance of where exactly to write. There is a clear space for learners to write their name on the line at the base of the sheet and a clear space to record the number-date at the top of the sheet - helpful to keep all completed sheets and track progress (and improvement!) over time… Important message… ANY issues with this resource please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make any changes. Phase 2/3 Red Set - s a t p i n letter/picture match

What’s included? This download includes x20 pdf pages, portrait orientation in colour featuring five sets of ten/five images that begin with the sounds s/a/t/p/i/n with x2 sheets (featuring the same images) providing x10 words to sound out and write for each letter. Letters ‘i’ and ’n’ have x5 words each. The words to sound out only use letters found in Phases 2 and 3 - perfect to practise and reinforce Phase 2/3 sound knowledge. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to practise sounding out words using letters/sounds within Phases 2 and 3 - sounding out to spell, read and write them. Resource Details The tick in each image box on page 1 (top right) indicates that this image is a word which can be sounded out. The layout of every letter/sound in this set is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. Page 1 is designed to be used with all letters in this red set - match initial letter sounds with images. Pages 2 and 3 are for practising sounding out and writing words on. Page 4 shows the ‘answers’. How to use it? Page 1. An adult prints page 1 out onto card and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate ‘letters’ from ‘images’. Instructions are also included on page 1. The set (of cut up letters and images) can be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the correct initial letter sound as a ‘two part’ mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the corresponding image. s socks/skull/starfish/stamp (on a letter)/snail/slug/sun/sting (from a wasp/bee)/skeleton/swim a alarm clock/alligator/album (photo album)/add/animals/ant/abacus/alpaca/Africa/asparagus t tick/tent/tractor/trees/tooth/truck/toaster/tools/torch/trainers p panda/planets/park/pumpkin/pelican/presents/printer/popcorn/pink/plant i ink/igloo/insects/infant (not ‘baby’)/ingots (gold) n numbers/north/napkin/nest/night Pages 2/3. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the sheet, one image per box. Page 2 is easier to complete as lines (to write on) show how many sounds are in each word. Any ‘red’ lines to write on indicate a ‘tricky’ sound which may be difficult to hear clearly when the word is spoken or may be an irregular spelling (not yet learnt). Learners may need help with these letters/sounds. Page 5 clearly shows the answers. Red letters identify a tricky/irregular spelling. Resource layout The font used on page 1 is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120. The font is the same type on page 4 - size 40. Ants on apples rhyme - Letter ‘h’ Sample!

(0)
What’s included? This download includes one simple, predictable alphabet rhyme for the letter ‘h’ - in colour AND black and white (so x2 sheets in total). This rhyme has been set out landscape orientation - the complete ‘alphabet set’ is available in my TES shop! What’s it for? This rhyme is part of an alphabet set (of the same layout) and has been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make noun-words clear) and each rhyme practises one phonic sound - this rhyme focuses on ‘h’. How to use it? Using a pointer (or pointy finger!) learners point to each word/sound as they say/sing it out loud, some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) In this rhyme the horses wear the hats! This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. These rhymes also provide a great opportunity to practise using one to one correspondence - an important early reading skill. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds and practising reading using one to one correspondence. Resource Details The layout of every letter/sound rhyme is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 50, so a good, ‘easy to read’ size. This rhyme is - Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses h, h, h. Hats on horses! Suggestions Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together. I recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them in good condition. You may wish to introduce these rhymes alongside learning these sounds for the first time and have a set (e.g. of x6) of every rhyme printed out and laminated for groups to use as an extension/quiet activity. Or, these rhymes may be good to introduce later to recap on some sounds which may be proving to be more tricky to remember. My classes of early years and year one children were really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves using ‘whispery voices’ (so cute!) I found that all learners really enjoyed using these with a ‘pointer’ which I had a pot of (pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use. Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a different version if you have an idea just let me know - I’d love to hear from you! Phase 2/3 Orange Set - m d g o c k Sounding out words

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x24 pdf pages, portrait orientation in colour featuring six sets of ten images that begin with the sounds m/d/g/o/c/k with x2 sheets (featuring the same images) providing x10 words to sound out and write for each letter. The words to sound out only use letters found in Phases 2 and 3. What’s it for? Page 1 is designed to be used with all letters in this orange set - match initial letter sounds with images. Pages 2 and 3 are for practising sounding out and writing words on. Page 4 shows the ‘answers’. How to use it? Page 1. An adult prints page 1 out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’ (instructions are included on page 1). The set can then be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each (correct) letter only fits the correct image. Page 2. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the sheet, one image per box. Page 2 is easier to complete as lines show how many sounds are in each word. Any ‘red’ lines to write on indicate a ‘tricky’ sound as it may be difficult to hear clearly when the word is spoken or may be an irregular spelling (not yet learnt). Learners may need help with these letters/sounds. Page 3. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the line - there is one image per box. Page 3 is the more tricky than page 2 as learners only have one ‘line’ to write the words on (without an indication of how many sounds are in each word). Page 4 clearly shows the answers - set out in the same format as pages 2 and 3 for learners to use themselves to crosscheck their work independently - encouraging autonomy. Red letters identify a tricky/irregular spelling. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The tick in each image box on page 1 (top right) indicates that this image is a word which CAN be sounded out. The layout of every letter/sound in this set is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. Resource layout The font used on page 1 is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size. The font is the same type on page 4 - size 40. Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes! Feedback of this resource would be excellent! Thank you!

Phase 2 'satpin' Writing words (Set 1)

(0)
What’s included? x4 sheets total for Phase 2 phonics (Set 1 - satpin). x3 sheets with x6 cards to cut out plus x1 ‘answers’ sheet. All landscape orientation, pdf format Who’s it for? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has been designed practise sounding out and writing simple words using only sounds in Phase 2. This set focuses on letters s, a, t, p, i, n. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently and/or for learners to revisit these sounds with an adult. This resource has been designed for Early Years children, pupils in Year 1 who are just learning these sounds for the first time or who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? An adult cuts along the dotted lines and places the set of x6 word cards on a table top. Learners look at the image on the left (of each card) - say this out loud and sound it out. Learners then write these sounds as graphemes on the lines (on the right) of each card/strip. A visual answer sheet is included which learners can use themselves to encourage autonomy. Resource Details… ALL images featured here have been chose because they CAN be sounded out in the order that the Phase 2 sounds have been learnt. This red ‘Set 1’ (with the exception of ‘nest’ - which contains an ‘e’ from set 3) includes words which all contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n. The same design resource for the remaining letters in Phase 2 are also available in my TES shop. The words to read are listed here: Set 1 s - stamp a - ant t - tap p - pan i - ink n - nest (contains ‘e’ - introduced later, with set 3) Suggestion These x6 cards could be laminated and used as a table top activity for learners to access independently using a wipe clean pen. Special request ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a new resource if you have an idea just let me know - I’d love to hear from you! Alphabet Matching Set (Square cards)

Alphabet Matching Set (Square cards)

(0)
What’s included? This download includes nine A4, portrait pdf sheets to make an Alphabet matching set featuring x54 cards (pictures to name, say the initial sound of and match to the correct letter card - upper and lowercase letters both included). How to use this resource This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the square (cards) are already cut up (and hole punched!), shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on the ring. Learners then look at each picture and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the picture card to the alphabet letter card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (pictures and letters together) learners can then order the pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet (or vice versa which can be much trickier!) Pictures included are apple, banana, car, dog (Dachshund!), egg, frog, grass, house, ink, jam, key, lemon, milk, nine numbers, orange, pink pig, quarter, robot, sun, tree, upside-down umbrella, van, wall (not to be confused with ‘bricks’ !) xylophone, yellow yoyo, zebra. This alphabet shape matching set could be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to cross-check the correct orientation of individual letters if unsure when writing. This ‘alphabet match’ set could also be used for a variety of ways, both inside and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the pictures cards or all the letter label cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Suggestion I recently purchased some brightly coloured plastic keyrings which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic (as seen on the main resource image). Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small piece of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource. Important message… ANY issues with this alphabet matching set please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a new resource if you have an idea just let me know - I’d really love to hear from you! **Feedback of this resource would be wonderful! The wheel can be turned clockwise or anticlockwise, the direction doesn’t matter. Some words will be ‘real’ e.g. den//hen/men/pen and some words will not be real (will be ‘nonsense’) words e.g. len/ren. Real/nonsense words made can be written on page 3. There is space for x10 real and x10 nonsense words to be written here and a clear space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet). Suggestion For older, more able learners this activity could be linked to looking up new words in the dictionary to find out if they are/are not real words and if they are ‘real’ words e.g. ‘fen’ find out what their meanings are (Fen is used to refer to an area of low, flat, wet land, especially in the east of England) - so now you know! Important message… ANY issues with any of this CVC phonics wheel please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes as needed. Feedback of this resource would be wonderful! Thank you!

Each player places the three dice next to each other, left to right - red, amber, green. Player sounds out the graphemes to read the word. If this is a ‘real’ word player writes it in the coloured boxes on their card (on the ‘left’ side). If this is a ‘nonsense’ word the player writes this word in the coloured boxes on their card (on the right side). Play passes to next player. If a player rolls the same combination as previously rolled they can have another turn. First player to roll (read and write!) x5 real OR nonsense words wins! There are various words which can be made using this combination of letters in the set order. Some ‘real word’ examples include sat/bat/hat/mat/pat/rat, pig/bill/hill/mill/pill, pull/bug/hug/mug/rug, sock/rock/hog, hen/men/pen/red/bell/sell. I hope you have fun finding them all - real AND nonsense! Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Important message… ANY issues with this phonics dice game please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a new resource if you have an idea just let me know - I’d really love to hear from you! Feedback of these resources and this phonics game would be wonderful! Thank you!

(0)
What’s included? x4 sheets in total for Phase 2 phonics (Set 2 - mdgock). x3 sheets with x6 cards to cut out plus x1 ‘answers’ sheet. All landscape orientation, pdf format. What is it? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has been designed practise sounding out and writing simple words only using sounds in Phase 2. This set focuses on letters m, d, g, o, c, k. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for Early Years children, pupils in Year 1 who are just learning these sounds for the first time or who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for learners with additional learning needs. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently and/or for learners to revisit these sounds with an adult. This orange ‘Set 2’ (with the exception of ‘gift’ - which contains a ‘f’ from set 4) includes words which all contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k. The same design resource for the remaining letters in Phase 2 are also available in my TES shop. The words included are listed here: Set 2 m - map d - dog g - gift (contains ‘f’ ‘ introduced later, with set 4) o - octagon (although this is a longer word it can be sounded out using sounds from sets 1 and 2. IF learners know this 2D shape) c - cat k - kit (e.g. football/PE kit) Suggestion These x6 cards could be laminated and used as a table top activity for learners to access independently using a wipe clean pen. Special request ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a new resource if you have an idea just let me know - I’d love to hear from you! Feedback would be wonderful! Thank you!
Alphabet Matching Set (Circle cards)

Alphabet Matching Set (Circle cards)

(0)
What’s included? This download includes nine A4, portrait pdf sheets to make an Alphabet matching set featuring x54 cards (pictures to name, say the initial sound of and match to the correct letter card - upper and lowercase letters both included). How to use this resource This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the circles are cut up, shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on the ring. Learners then look at each picture and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the picture card to the alphabet letter card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (pictures and letters together) learners can then order the pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet (or vice versa which can be much trickier!) Pictures included are apple, banana, car, dog (Dachshund!), egg, frog, grass, house, ink, jam, key, lemon, milk, nine numbers, orange, pink pig, quarter, robot, sun, tree, upside-down umbrella, van, wall (not to be confused with ‘bricks’ !) xylophone, yellow yo-yo, zebra. Thank you!
